Preventing Diabetic Foot Ulcers: Comfort and Protection With Each Step

Diabetes can damage the nervous system of a person with diabetes. Individuals with diabetes may not be able to feel his or her feet properly. Normal sweat secretion and oil production that lubricates the skin of the foot is impaired. These factors together can lead to abnormal pressure on the skin, bones, and joints of the foot during walking and can lead to breakdown of the skin of the foot. Sores may develop.
Damaged blood vessels and impairment of the immune system from diabetes make it difficult to heal these wounds. Infection of the skin, connective tissues, muscles, and bones can then occur. Reduction in blood flow to the toes and feet can lead to painful diabetic foot ulcers that lead to amputation of the toes, foot or leg.
People with diabetes must be fully aware of how to prevent foot problems before they occur, to recognize problems early, and to seek the right treatment when problems do occur. Although treatment for diabetic foot problems has improved, prevention – including good control of blood sugar level by testing their blood with a no-code monitor and consulting a healthcare professional- remains the best way to prevent diabetic complications.
People with diabetes should learn how to examine their own feet daily and learn how to recognize the early signs and symptoms of diabetic foot problems.

SensiFoot Diabetic Socks

Selecting the right pair of socks is a crucial and inexpensive way to aid in the prevention of diabetic foot ulcers. Diabetic socks made from acrylic yarns instead of cotton allow moisture to wick away and keep the feet comfortable and dry. A good pair of diabetic socks should have low profile seams and extra padding in the heel, foot and toe to reduce pressure and irritation.
The use of heel cream may help treat and prevent cracked heels, fissures, and severe dry skin conditions often seen in diabetics, athletes, and the aging population. Using a cream on a daily basis can improve the condition of the diabetic individual in as little as two weeks.
While following these guidelines can help prevent diabetic foot ulcers, it is also important to recognize when to call the doctor, and how to realize when a problem with their feet has become serious enough to seek additional treatment.

A Better Choice for People with Difficulty Swallowing

Simply Thick ProductsSwallowing problems, known as dysphagia, affect millions of people each year. Although we rarely think about it, the normal healthy swallow is a complex process involving nearly 40 muscles and around 7 nerves. Difficulty swallowing can be the result of a progressive neurological disease – such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease – or a traumatic injury – such as a stroke or an accident in a moving vehicle. When this happens, a common method of managing swallowing problems is to use food thickeners with all of the patient’s liquids.

“Using a food thickener does a few things for the patient,” explains John Holahan, President of Simply Thick, LLC. “First it slows the beverage down in the mouth, so it is easier to control. Second, it provides more body in the mouth, so you can feel where the beverage is. And thirdly, it provides better control of forming the bolus in preparation for actually swallowing. Finally, if the beverage is not completely cleared in the first swallow, thickening will help prevent the beverage from ending up in the patient’s lungs.”

Traditionally, powdered food thickeners have been used with patients. But powders are less than ideal. They are very difficult to mix with the tools found in most people’s kitchens, leading to powder clumps and beverages that continue to thicken after mixing. And worst of all, they look bad and taste bad.

Holahan saw an opportunity. “I wondered if I could create a food thickener that would mix quickly and completely, yet have the thickened beverage still look good and taste good. It was quite a challenge, but I think we got it right”.

The result is Simply Thick® gel food thickener. The gel form of food thickener is a novel approach that mixes rapidly and completely with simple household equipment – like a fork. The response has been dramatic.

“Clinicians and patients alike are astounded at how good thickened liquids look and taste when they use Simply Thick® gel food thickener. My favorite quote came in an email from a speech therapist,” continues Holahan, “she had a hemiplegic stroke patient who described his beverages thickened with Simply Thick® gel as ‘Heaven sent. Better than walking. Nectar of the Gods!”.

Simply Thick gel food thickener comes in 3 basic forms. Packets are sized for thickening either an individual serving or a quart of a beverage at a time and there is 64 oz. bottle of Simply Thick with a pump that provides maximum flexibility in the amount of beverage prepared.
